Q: Tell us about your business and why you started it.
I started blogging when I finished my 4 years at University, where I studied psychology, coaching and counselling. I was eager to share my knowledge, particularly in the areas of mindfulness and stress management. I wanted to empower people with new skills which would help them live happier, calmer, more connected and more fulfilling lives. In 2015, I launched my podcast (which is now at 160+ episodes and 3+ million downloads) and in 2019 my first book, The Mindful Kind, was published. I love working creatively and waking up each day not knowing how it might unfold.
Q: Who do you admire in business and why do you look up to them?
I admire Lisa Messenger's authenticity and tenacity. I think she has incredible resilience and courage and her book, Daring and Disruptive, played a huge role in helping me get started with my own business and overcoming self-doubt.
I also think Jenna Kutcher is a wonderful role model - she uses her platforms to become friends with her followers and has created a business that really aligns with her lifestyle.
Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew about business when you started?
I always felt uncomfortable charging for my services and products, but now I try to
remember that without a sustainable income, I simply can't keep building as many new resources for my community. It's important to find a balance between making a positive difference in the world and feeling supported and secure in my own life so I can show up as my best self in my business.
Q: When you look back on your life what do you want people to say about your life/legacy?
I hope that people remember me for being kind. I love to think that compassion can flow through my work to the people who might need it. There’s nothing more meaningful to me than hearing from my community that I’ve helped them feel less alone and more supported as they navigate life.
Q: Why do you believe in the power of #womensupportingwomen?
I think it strips away unhealthy competition, jealousy, or comparison and allows all women to shine in their own ways – and encourage each other to do so. It creates opportunities for collaboration and progress and growth.
Q: What’s one cool thing we should know about you?
I absolutely love animals! I’ve volunteered at a wildlife shelter in Australia and bottle-fed orphaned kangaroos, wombats and wallabies. My dogs are my besties. Some of my favourite adventures from my trip to Europe in 2018 included hiking for 7 hours to find Highland Cows and hand-feeding semi-domesticated reindeer in Scotland. I just love being around animals – I think they’re so beautiful.
Q: What’s your dream for your business - or end goal?
I’d love to have my own minimal home in the country with lots of space, an orchard and vegetable garden, plenty of time to write and work creatively, an income which sustains my lifestyle without having to worry about money and time to look after myself and enjoy life. My partner works on the business, too, so we’d have a functional working-from-home station with stand-up desks and great views!
