Meet Shona Smithson

This week's #WomanRisingWednesday Q&A is with Shona Smithson of

Shona is a Mum of two from the Barossa in South Australia. Self-proclaimed badass wine lover and authenticity ambassador.

Shona’s journey began at 7 years old, her first business venture, pedicures at family functions for $2 each 20 years later, she owns a spray tanning company and is a full time Money Mindset Coach for mums. Shona is Passionate about helping Mums overcome their limiting beliefs about money, totally transform their Money Mindset and Un-complicate their finances. Giving them the tools and support to empower Mums who want to learn how to manifest wealth without all the fluff.

Firstly, let’s get the facts:

Name: Shona Gates

Age: 27

Business Location: Global

Founded: 2018

Facebook: SexySelfish

Instagram: SexySelfish

Q: Tell us about your business and why you started it.

Honesty, I was sitting in my car crying, with my 3-year-old and 1 year old. After I ran, embarrassed from my local supermarket because my card got declined trying to buy toilet paper …. I couldn’t even afford toilet paper (not my proudest moment).

That’s when I realised something needed to change, 2 businesses later and hours upon hours of reading, watching learning and implementing personal growth/money mindset work I knew this is what I was being called to impact other mums with. I founded Sexy Selfish to help mums get rid of money fear, guilt and shame for good, if you can help mums, you impact kids and then they grow up and instil the same lessons in their own kids … if you help mums, everyone wins.

We focus completely on mums and helping them to feel empowered and excited about money, bring the fun back into their life and create a financial wall around their families for the future … but in a nut shell it’s all about having and modelling a healthy relationship with money for our kids.

Q: Who do you admire in business and why do you look up to them?

So, So many incredible people …. I have followed Roxy Jacenko since I was a teenager and even got into PR at university before settling down to have kids, I love everything about her fierce passion and unapologetic ambition and still stalk her Instagram till this day. My business coach Lauren, she’s the queen of keeping silent and smashing goals and I love how she’s has lets life flow, some days super ambitious, some days renovating houses.

Other than that, probably the clothing brand from Melbourne Feather and Noise, I’m obsessed with their clothes, but I’m even more obsessed with their staff, workshop, culture and social media … it just looks like a really incredible team of women and I always keep that vison in mind when I am adding people to our Sexy Selfish team. Culture and Fun!

Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew about business when you started?

Every new level of your business will require a different level of you.

You have to keep constantly growing, up-levelling and developing as a person and Business woman to keep evolving and growing your business. Every time I would feel stuck in Business growth it was because I personally was stagnant. Sure enough the universe throws you a few challenges along the way .. but you want that, the challenges and the shitty moments are where you really take big leaps in your own self growth.

Q: When you look back on your life what do you want people to say about your life/legacy?

She loved BIG, She always spoke her truth, she had courage and compassion, She inspired us to be better, to care more, to live more, to laugh always.

Q: Why do you believe in the power of #womensupportingwomen?

Because when women support women, we can change the world.

Q: What’s one cool thing we should know about you?

Oh gosh, I am the completely opposite of cool. I asked my husband this question and he freaked out like it was a test and started quoting lines from the movie couples retreat “sorry babe, your awesome … but you’re not exactly cool” he said. There’s not much cool about me, I work hard, I own about 3 pairs of shoes, I have awful handwriting and I’m a big fan of Doctor Who … yep, the opposite of “cool”.

The coolest thing about me is probably my car, I drive my dream car, a White jeep wrangler. I wanted one since the first time I saw clueless as a 13-year-old, last year I celebrated my biggest month in business by buying my dream car.

Q: What’s your dream for your business - or end goal?

My dream for my business is to reach as many people as possible, to inspire and empower them to learn how to spend, save, earn, invest and attract Money with fun and ease. I’m so passionate about breaking the generational cycles of lack and rewriting family’s money blueprints, but at the same time, educating them about sustainable and ethical choices. When I think about being able to grow my business, hire more staff, collaborate with more mums etc my spine goes all tingly. My big ambition is to be able to grow and expand, hiring specifically Boss Mumma’s from South Australia. I seriously fantasize about hiring or contracting a Mum's business and transferring thousands of dollars into her bank account. I’ve been on the other end of that exchange and I know how incredible it feels, I can’t wait to do more of that and circulate money back to other mums. Having a copy of my soon to be published book in every mum’s nappy bag and in every local library or playgroup is another one of those BIG goals!!
